ABOUT HELP CONNECT JA

Community-driven. Compassion-powered. Connecting families in crisis.

Our Story

In October 2025, Hurricane Melissa devastated Jamaica. Communication systems collapsed. Cell towers toppled. Roads washed away. Power lines fell. Families desperate to find their loved ones had nowhere to turn.

Traditional methods failed when they were needed most.

We saw families posting scattered pleas across social media, messages disappearing into crowded feeds with no organization, no follow-up, no hope. They knew there had to be a better way.

Help Connect JA was born from that urgency.

What started as a WhatsApp conversation on became an Instagram page and then a dedicated website. The mission was simple: create a centralized platform where families could report missing persons and the community could help search.

Our Mission

We exist to bridge the gap between desperate families and the communities that can help find their loved ones.

Help Connect JA provides a free platform where anyone can report missing persons in Jamaica. We review every submission with care, verify information when possible, and amplify each case across our website and social media to reach thousands of Jamaicans, both on the island and in the diaspora.

Our Promise

This is a free service, always. We don’t charge families in crisis. We don’t profit from tragedy. We simply connect people who need to find each other.

We handle everything from Hurricane disaster victims to general missing persons cases, treating each family with urgency, compassion, and respect.

OUR PROCESS

How We Verify Information

Every case that comes through Help Connect JA goes through a careful review process:

WHAT WE CAN AND CAN’T DO

What We Can Do ✓

  • Amplify Your Search: Post your missing person report to thousands of community members across Jamaica and the diaspora.
  • Coordinate Tips: Receive tips from the community and forward verified information to you immediately.
  • Provide Resources: Connect families with emergency services, shelters, and relief organizations.
  • Update Statuses: Keep your listing current as new information becomes available.
  • Share Success Stories: Celebrate reunions (with your permission) to give hope to other families.

What We Can’t Do ✗

  • We Are NOT Law Enforcement: We cannot conduct official investigations or access government databases.
  • We Cannot Physically Search: We are a communication platform, not a search and rescue operation.
  • We Cannot Guarantee Outcomes: We make no guarantees that missing persons will be located, though we do everything possible to help.
  • We Cannot Verify All Information: User-submitted reports may contain inaccuracies. We review carefully but cannot independently verify every detail.
  • We Cannot Replace Official Channels: Always file a police report with Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF: 119) in addition to using our platform.

Our Team

While we started as three people with a WhatsApp group and a mission, we’ve grown into a community of volunteers committed to helping Jamaican families reunite.

We come from different backgrounds, web development, digital marketing, and community organizing, but we share one belief: hope lives where people connect.

BEYOND HURRICANE MELISSA

Our Future

While Help Connect JA launched in response to Hurricane Melissa, we recognize that missing persons cases happen year-round for many reasons: natural disasters, medical emergencies, family separations, and more.

  • Continuing This Service Beyond Hurricane Recovery: Missing persons cases don’t end when the storm passes. We’re here for the long term.
  • Expanding to Help with Future Natural Disasters: Whether hurricane, earthquake, or flood, we’ll be ready to help families reconnect.
  • Building Partnerships: Working with official agencies, relief organizations, and community groups to maximize our impact.
  • Potentially Serving the Wider Caribbean Region: If this model works in Jamaica, it can work across the Caribbean. We’re exploring expansion opportunities.
  • Improving Our Technology: Adding features like advanced search, SMS submissions, and automated status updates to serve families better.

WHY JAMAICA NEEDS HELP CONNECT JA

Jamaica faces unique challenges when it comes to missing persons:

  • Infrastructure Vulnerability: Our island is prone to natural disasters: hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, that can destroy communication systems overnight.
  • Limited Resources: Law enforcement agencies do their best, but they’re often overwhelmed during crisis situations.
  • Scattered Information: Before Help Connect JA, families posted on dozens of different Facebook groups, Instagram pages, and WhatsApp chats. Information got lost in the noise.
  • Diaspora Disconnect: Many Jamaicans living abroad have family on the island. When disaster strikes, they have no way to search from overseas.
  • Community Strength: Jamaicans help Jamaicans. We have a culture of community support, but we lacked a centralized tool to organize that help.

Help Connect JA solves these problems by providing one organized, searchable, always-available platform where families and community members can connect.

COMMON QUESTIONS

We’re currently self-funded by volunteers. No government grants, no corporate sponsors. We are just community members who care.

No, we are independent. However, we encourage all families to file official police reports in addition to using our platform.

Ask a friend, neighbor, or church member to submit on your behalf. Or visit any location with public WiFi. We’re exploring SMS submission options for the future.

You can submit without displaying your contact information publicly, but we need a way to contact you with updates. We keep your information private unless you choose to share it.

Posts remain active until the person is found or the family requests removal. We periodically check in with families to ensure information is current.
